True Biblical Assurance
Deuteronomy 28:1-2,15-16, 66-67

And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God….But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee: Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field…And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life: In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see.

True Biblical Assurance only comes from the person of God through our ongoing personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.  He will never leave us but He will let you leave Him.  If we do not do our part to maintain our personal relationship with Him, we will lose the blessings of that relationship including our assurance of salvation and of His love and of His protection and of His provision.  If you have any problem in any of these areas then do your part to repair your ongoing personal relationship with Him.

  1. Assurance From Obedience
    1. Our initial reference told us that God warned His people that He would bless lifestyle obedience and curse lifestyle disobedience.  That warning still applies today because it is part of our personal relationship with God.
    2. The book of Hebrews makes it clear that the only thing which the New Testament replaced is the religious part of the Mosaic Law.  The moral part deals with our personal relationship with God and all of that was established before the Mosaic Law was given.  Therefore it still applies today and our reference is part of the moral part of the Mosaic Law.
    3. We receive assurance of our salvation and that God wants to bless us as we do our part in the ongoing personal relationship by obeying God.
  2. Assurance of Peace
    1. And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever. (Isaiah 32:17).
    2. Here we are literally told that assurance for ever is the effect of righteousness.  We can only do righteousness by obeying God in our personal life.  We can only have assurance for ever by personally obeying out Lord.
    3. We are also told that the result will be peace.  If we have fear or worry then our faith in God is immature.  Infants have lots of fears, not even looking at some people.  Children have less fears.  As our faith in God grows, our worries and fears should decrease because of our trust in God.
  3. Lack of Assurance due to Doctrinal Error
    1. Then said the LORD unto me, Pray not for this people for their good. When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence. Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place. Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart. (Jeremiah 14:11-14).
    2. Here God said that He would bring judgment upon His people because they disobeyed.  God even told Jeremiah to not pray for them.  Romans 6:16 tells us about a sin unto death for God’s people who live a lifestyle obeying doctrinal error.  1John 5:16 tells us to not pray for such people, just like God told Jeremiah.  You can not lost your salvation but God will take away your assurance of salvation if you continue to live a lifestyle of sin.
  4. Assurance of Judgment
    1. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter. Acts 17:30-32).
    2. This tells us that the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead assures us that God will have Jesus Christ judge all men for righteousness.  Those who truly Biblically repent, and accept Him as Lord, will receive mercy.  Those who reject, such as the people who mocked in our reference, will be sent to the lake of fire.
  5. Assurance Due to Understanding
    1. For I would that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh; That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Colossians 2:1-3).
    2. Our reference tells us that assurance comes from understanding the spiritual truths of the Bible and understanding these mysteries.  From them we get God’s treasures of wisdom and knowledge.  This requires personal study of the Bible and the things which only come from obeying God and the Bible, and experiencing God working through your personal life.  As already mentioned for an earlier reference, spiritual maturity increases our faith, our peace and our assurance that God will provide and protect.
  6. Assurance From Experience
    1. For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake. And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost: So that ye were ensamples to all that believe in Macedonia and Achaia. (1Thessalonians 1:5-7).
    2. Our living what we claim and preach gives assurance to others and to ourselves as God works in and through our lives.  Our reference says that they having received the word in much affliction.  Yet, as God provided and protected them through the much affliction, they received assurance that can not be received any other way.  God lets us experience situations where it is obvious that we can’t get ourselves out so that everyone knows that it was God working when we get out of the situation.  This experience gives us assurance that God will protect no matter what the situation is.
    3. In addition, God delivering His people gives God glory and provides assurance to people who are watching.  None of us are anything special.  If God will deliver us then others can be assured that God will deliver them also.
  7. Assurance of Everlasting Reward
    1. For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister. And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. (Hebrews 6:10-12).
    2. Lots of people quote the first sentence of this reference and leave out the next sentence.  However, our reference tells us that we must shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: and we must personally be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
    3. Our being diligent as we follow of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises, by doing the same things as they did, gives us the full assurance that we also will inherit the promises.  However, if we are not diligent and do not do the same things as they did then God, that cannot lie (Titus 1:2) will take away our assurance of the promises, including our assurance of our eternal salvation.
  8. Assurance of Acceptance
    1. Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. (Hebrews 10:19-25).
    2. This section actually has two points in it.  The first point is that we can approach the throne of God with boldness and a true heart in full assurance of faith because the blood of Jesus saved us and made us children of God.  Anyone who has not received Jesus as their personal Lord are excluded from this.  Now, in addition, we must have our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.  That is, as we confess our sins, Jesus removes our evil conscience according to 1John 1:9-10.  He also causes us to change our actions to stop sinning, which is the symbolic meaning of the phrase having our bodies washed with pure water, in our reference.  If we are not letting Jesus change our conscience and actions, then we will not have this assurance.
    3. The second point of our reference is that we must do the actions of a true child of God.  That is, we must:
  9. Assurance from a True Testimony
    1. My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. (1John 3:18-19)
    2. This literally says that we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him if we do not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.  Our assurance is NOT based upon a profession but is based upon deed and truth.
    3. The Bible tells us that truth is defined by the Bible and is personified in Jesus Christ who is pictured by the Bible.  This means that we must do the deed that the Bible tells us that Jesus Christ did if we want assurance of our salvation and of everything that comes with it.
    4. We must have a true testimony.  If our testimony does not match our claimed salvation, then we will lose our assurance even while we can not lose our salvation.
